This is a very quick rework I did of Close-up (with Ayla's permission). I think this is a simple demonstration of the difference a few quick adjustments in Photoshop can do. On this image I took the same steps on almost all my own macro photographs; firstly, use the "Auto levels" function (under "Image -> Adjustments") which effectively removes any colored haze from the image; secondly increase the color saturation by about 20 - 30 (sometimes more, but this will usually make the image appear unnatural). Finally I like to decrease the brightness by about 10 and increase the contrast between 10 and 30; this gives the image a more abstract feel so doesn't work for everything. The same procedure can be used on non-photographic images such as terragen images.

That's pretty much exactly what I do. It takes a bit of extra work, but it's well worth it. Nice Rework.

Wow...I've had Photo Shop for about 3 years and I never thought of doing it that way!! I'll have to try it. I'm shooting in RAW and editing through the RAW editor at the moment, so I'm probably getting similar results, but it takes a lot longer. Thanks for all this great info, and if it weren't for the heated discussion that I'm following that's going on in the thread "Something's Not Right" and your response there, I would never have had the thought to come and look at your fine gallery. There are up sides to every dark cloud !!! :)
