If I had to guess I would say it is the back of a nice dining room chair. It's either that or your making some good caramel candy. Good one Carol.

Ima go with Laura's guess of a hair comb, or..

(*struggles with his maleness and lack of familiarity with these things*)

... a decorative hair pin?

Erhm.. barrette?

... ...

Ok, then.

I need to go and open up the hood of a car, or, start a barbecue or sumthin.

... ...

Best of luck in the contest, Carol.

I'm also guessing hair comb, for those with long hair tied into a bun!..

Good close up...and best of luck in the contest!

I see that the teeth are slightly curved and so it is one of those curved comb that one sticks in the hair to keep the hair in place.

Carol, I join Laura, Les, and Bob with their suggestion. To me it's a hair comb for keeping long hair in the styled position.
Very apt entry however!
Good Luck with it, my friend!

Looks like part of a beautiful Victorian faux tortoise shell hair comb Laura.
Super entry :)

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust

I think everyone agrees it is a hair comb that holds hair in place Carol. I will join the crowd.
Good entry.

An old hair comb, the swirling color was termed "tortoise shell", like the breed of cat. That shine tells me it's plastic and not carved wood. This type of comb was used mainly for holding hair in place at the top or back of the head.

Good luck in the contest, Carol (sorry... I just finished a 40-year career in history :o).

I, too, think it looks like a tortoise shell hair comb. But what fun would that guess be?

So ...

An ornate acupuncture implement?
A sliding lid to a cricket cage?
Very uniform, white stalagmites in a tortoise shell cave?
A Mardi Gras mask?
A fancy looming reed?
A corn silk remover? (I'd buy one of those!)
A decorative, feminine version of The Punisher's toothy skull logo?
A new style, multi-pronged fork for the better capture of peas?
A back scratcher?
None of the above?

Does look like a hair comb like the one you use to keep in the hair to create a fancy do. Excellent entry - good luck

Most of you guessed right, it is a tortoise shell comb. I found it at a flee market and thought our daughter could use it. Took the photo first before handing it over to her. It was a fun contest!!

Excellent (and beautiful) entry for the contest, Carol!

Terrific macro, too! I love all that rich, melted caramel, tortoise shell coloring.
