This is a late afternoon shot looking down into the crater, and down onto the clouds in the distance. The trail in the photo goes off in the distance for miles. My friends say this reminds them of a moonscape or something sent back from Mars. (Originally captured on film, this image prints well at 4' x 5'.)

Very desolate and lunar. I've been into a few volcanic craters now, and it's always a bit of a surreal environment. Quite humbling too. Great shot: Ricky.

Where we have come from has absolutely no bearing upon where we are capable of going.

Now that's a neat curve!! Is the sky dropped in / manip'd in?? Luv the lighting and contrast on the hill!! Does kinda look like a moonscape!!

Good luck in the contest!!

Why do the pictures come out square when the lens is round??

Interesting dramatic location. Colors are vibrant. Contrasts enhance the image. Nice work!

Alan, I don't even know where to begin with this one. The heck with the contest this is just an all-around superb post! To look down on the clouds while still on the ground bends the brain for those of us that have never done it, the composition is superb, and the clarity exceptional. Very well done and good luck in the contest.

What a mood-evoking capture. You have offered a rare glimpse into the mysterious world of the crater. The curve of the trail serves great as a glowing leading line guiding my eyes towards the mountains and the sky. Good luck in the contest.

The sky was what you see. The original scan from film left a slightly warmer (washed out) sky, so I had to give it special color correction and a little enhancement in CS3.

Stark, desolate beauty, Alan. I really like the dark and tawny hues contrasted by the sky. Fav'd and sav'd. You don't need luck in the contest...
