Shags are goose-sized dark long-necked birds similar to cormorants but smaller and generally slimmer with a characteristic steep forehead. In the breeding season adults develop a dark glossy green plumage and prominent recurved crest on the front of their head. In the UK they breed on coastal sites, mainly in the north and west, and over half their population is found at fewer than 10 sites, making them an Amber List species. Shags usually stay within 100-200km of their breeding grounds... First of a short series of seabirds,I'm about to upload.

Ya coulda fooled me. I sure thought it was a Cormorant when I first saw it. I like the expression of that Puffin in the background..."Hey, am I gonna be in the picture?"

Had me a little worried with the title...not to sure what I would see for a photo. A very interesting looking bird. Like the puffin in the background.

That bend on the tip of the beak is just like a cormorant. But I see that these cab "discolour" rocks even better than pelicans or gulls!

I think Austin Powers and Yogi agree about the Shag, Count B. Judging from the white rocks, I would say it is more then a breeding ground.
I like his hooked beak. I bet he could get one of them moths out of your wallet and ye would never know.

Comment unto one another as you would have them comment unto you. If you like comments, you need to comment some yourself.

I was expecting a shot of some rough-rolled tobacco. But this is much better.

Shag...hmm..interesting title, I sure didnt expect to see this funky bird...and that poor little Puffin shying away from this ugly ol' bird. He's probably shivering inside...hoping that black bird wouldn't do a bit of feather pickin'! Look at those clod hoppers for feet!! Nice photo tho, am looking forward to more!! Verena
