The nuthatch is a plump bird about the size of a great tit that resembles a small woodpecker. It is blue-grey above and whitish below, with chestnut on its sides and under its tail. It has a black stripe on its head, a long black pointed bill, and short legs. It breeds in central and southern England and in Wales, and is resident, with birds seldom travelling far from the woods where they hatch.Note the feet,These are designed for clinging to tree bark...R.

He's a purdy little thing. I never see them in my area, although I HAVE seen a few at a metro park about 40 miles from here. Very nice shot, Biff.

---The nuthatch is a plump bird---

Richie, as long as your feeder is filled that well, it will not go on a diet, lol!

Thanks for both a fine image and an interesting narrative.

Regards, Cornelius.

Your nuthatch is similar to ours, but yours is blue and orange like a bluebird. A cutie.

Richie...

I've seen a nuthatch but from the inside. Here we call them insane asylums. :-)

Around here we have acorn woodpeckers, seasonal oriels and two kinds of blue jays. I've never seen anything like this beauty. I gave up on my birdfeeder because of the squirrels and chipmunks. I live in the middle of nowhere; so I do my best to steer clear of critters of all kinds.

We have nuthatches also, they are fun to watch and very quick. They are the only bird that can walk down a tree upside down because of his back huge claw.
