Up at 2:30 this morning for the you know what.."It's an age thing".. Night clouds or noctilucent clouds are tenuous cloud-like phenomena that are the "ragged edge" of a much brighter and pervasive polar cloud layer called polar mesospheric clouds in the upper atmosphere, visible in a deep twilight. They are made of crystals of water ice. Noctilucent roughly means night shining in Latin. They are most commonly observed in the summer months at latitudes between 50° and 70° north and south of the equator. They can only be observed when the Sun is below the horizon.

Attention was paid to this phenomenon in my local newspaper of today, but they didn't provide a picture as good as your night shot Richie!

I believe you even if I can't pronounce the name. Was this worth getting up at 2.30 A.M. for? Yes I think so. Very nice sky above and lighting below on the ground.

This is great image and fascinating story - I agree with OB1 as to your vast encyclopedic knowledge - and hurry to express my envy about the views from your bathroom. All the more that I have no window at all in the bathroom!:)

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust

WOW, Amazing and excellent capture, I've never seen any like that. I know the feeling of waking up and not being able to sleep, that's the golden years, lol.
