The church in the centre of the picture is The Church of Our Lady and Saint Nicholas, affectionately known as St Nick's. It is the parish church of Liverpool and is situated down on the waterfront (the building on the right of the picture is The Liver Building).
The building work being carried out in front of the church is the long awaited Leeds-Liverpool Canal Extension. This is a scheme to connect the Leeds-Liverpool Canal to the docks via The Pier Head.

Why do the pictures come out square when the lens is round??

I guess it's not the same as Harvey Nicks, but that's another kind of place of worship in the age we live in. Always surprising to see the clash of old and new isn't it. I am always struck by the idea that lots of the old churches in our cities started life surrounded by fields in the middle of the countryside. Your shot really brings that mixed history out.
