The Liver Bird is the symbol of Liverpool (it's pronounced Lie-ver, not like the internal organ). The most famous examples can be found atop The Royal Liver Building situated on the waterfront and is part of a UNESCO World Herritage site.
The mythical Liver Bird is thought to be based on the cormorant as shown in this picture. This is Wallasey Docks and I noticed about 15 cormorants sitting on the side of the dock. Unfortunately the docks are fenced off and so I couldn't get very close.
