If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.
~ Henry David Thoreau

What I must do is all that concerns me, not what the people think. This rule, equally arduous in actual and intellectual life, may serve for the whole distinction between greatness and meanness. It is the harder, because you will always find those who think they know what is your duty better than you know it. It is easy in the world to live after the world's opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great person is one who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude.
~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do.”
~Helen Keller

I am afraid to show you who I really am, because if I show you who I really am, you might not like it--and that's all I got.”
~Sabrina Ward Harrison

A magnificent capture John! The darkness with the lighting in it is just outstanding to look at! Beautiful scene and its just plain perfect! Faving this one for sure. Between Emerson and Keller I wouldn't be able to decide who's better. I love these thoughts!

I really like this John, there's so much atmosphere and mystery. It makes me look beyond the trees in fact, there's a real brooding sense of anxiety here about what might be just out of view....The low angle and inclusion of the rocks in the foreground gives it tons of depth. A1, faved.

A hard shot to take, John. I've tried many times down by the river. You have done it so well, capturinig both light and dark exposures. A beautiful scene and the light rays in the distance add a nice warmth to the whole. Just lovely, John.

It looks like the kind of place the early settlers would have chosen to wash their dishes, clothes and bodies. They would have tarried as long as they could to enjoy this scene. Some of them probably stayed in Ohio instead of going any further. There is hope in that light. Excellent post Shads.

I had ancestors who were born in Vermont and died in Ohio, having made the trek west in the 1840's... Taking a cue from what Tick said, I can imagine them camped here or maybe even building a log house near the river... This is such a beautiful image, John, darn but you're gittin' good!

Oh I love the soft pastel colour in this photo, and the whole scene looks like a true work of art done many years ago. I can imagine settles from long ago loving this place, and 'camping out' for a while before moving on. You know you quoted three of my favorite people here. Thoreau is wonderful. He could feel things so beautifully and then put them on paper for us to enjoy. A spectacular writer, and you have taken a most lovely, sweet photo here JOhn..thank you ever so much, I do so enjoy your postings my friend!! Verena

Beautiful, serene capture, John! When looking at the trees, I see a wonderful painterly effect. I love the low perspective and inclusion of the rocks in the foreground! I also love the pastel rays... adding a special touch to overall! I'm particularly fond of that first quote :) Excellent composition my friend!
