An 1859 solar storm caused the Sun's corona to expel a massive release of magnetic energy, known as a coronal mass ejection, or CME. It lit up the night sky leading some in mountainous regions of North America to wake up and start their day, believing it was morning, when it wasn't even midnight.

Though radio communication was in its nascent phase at the time, telegraph operators reported sparks and fire coming from their equipment, while some were even thrown across the room. A man named, Richard C. Carrington, had been recording the activity of sun spots at the time, quickly recognizing the nature of this phenomenon, and so it became known as a Carrington Event. Based on historical precedence, these massive CMEs typically happen every 150 years, leaving us overdue and more vulnerable than ever.

Interesting. We are so dependent on technology today, an event like you describe could be catastrophic.

If it had been a Rodney Carrington event, the planet Venus would have been involved Strat.
Superior work once again.

John, the massive release of magnetic energy by the sun, called CME in this 'sophisticated' world would cause a disaster, but I believe that it's inevitable. The Apocalypse initiated by the sun. 1859 + 150 = 2009! However, we're still 'counting'.

So this post is from artistic point of view not only a a very fine one, but the message in it is an intriguing as well.

This might be a brown dwarf, or a star that almost was. They seem to be fairly common in the amazing universe we live in. What blows my mind about our rather average sized star is you could fit the roughly 240,000 miles to our moon three times inside the sun and still have over 100,000 miles left to go. That's big. But it's only a pinhead next to a supergiant star like UY Scuti, which could swallow our solar system out to Jupiter's orbit. Or the 20 billion solar mass black hole in the Phoenix Cluster, which is 4 light days in diameter! It really puts us in perspective, doesn't it?

This scene is striking, the colors, textures, patterns, so unique, actually quite breathtaking. And the music, pure joy.
