Go take a look at the list of the most active members on this site. Start in the left panel on the home page and follow these links: Site Information‐Member Information‐Most Active Members.
If we had working mods, this would be a good place to first look for and find some of our invading slugs. Look at the names listed before ::corngrowth. These “artists” do not post photographs or art, they only comment. Now look for artists you follow, below ::corngrowth. You do not find many on this list, do you?
There is no excuse for this site not to be able to control the slug problem. They are not even attempting to. For us old timers who have been here a long time and remember the days when this was a great site and maintained standards, this is a very sad realization to behold.

John, once again you've hit the nail on its head in your narrative. But you're like a voice crying in the wilderness: apparently, no one among the authorized Caedes members who are allowed to resolve this problem has heard your cry for help.
This is how we keep muddling through.
To be clear, I want to state that the work you've done has nothing to do with muddling through, as it is of very high quality!
