Gethsemane

Jesus was crucified the morning after the events in the Garden of Gethsemane‐less than one full day later (roughly 8‐12 hours, depending on exact timing).

In the standard biblical timeline (followed by the vast majority of Christian traditions and historians):

Maundy Thursday evening/night: Jesus and the disciples share the Last Supper. They then go to the Garden of Gethsemane (on the Mount of Olives), where Jesus prays in agony (Matthew 26:36‐46; Mark 14:32‐42; Luke 22:39‐46). Judas arrives with soldiers, and Jesus is betrayed and arrested late that night (around 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. ).

Overnight into early Friday morning: Jesus undergoes a series of trials (before Annas, Caiaphas and the Sanhedrin, then Pilate and Herod). He is scourged and sentenced.

Good Friday, ~9 a.m.: The crucifixion begins at Golgotha (Mark 15:25). Jesus dies around 3 p.m. and is buried before sunset.

Gethsemane and the arrest take place on what we call Thursday night (the start of the Jewish day that begins at sunset). The crucifixion happens the next morning on Friday. In modern calendar terms, this is the following day (1 day later on the calendar), but only a matter of hours had actually passed.

(Note: A minority of scholars propose a Wednesday or Thursday crucifixion to fit certain interpretations of “three days and three nights, ” but even in those views Gethsemane still occurs the night immediately before the crucifixion day. The traditional Thursday‐night‐to‐Friday timeline remains the most widely accepted. )

In short, there were no full days in between‐Gethsemane happened the night before the crucifixion.

Beautiful, John Thank you for posting this to remind us that it's not really about Easter bunnies but about Him and what He did for us. Faved.

John, I agree with Pat (SAW). In this day and age, many people don't know that both Easter and Christmas are based on the Christian faith. For them, Jesus Christ has made way for the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus with his red-nosed reindeer Rudolph. It's therefore good that you highlight the essence of Good Friday and Easter with your fitting render and narrative.

Thanks also for the well-chosen music links.

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust
