This photograph is taken during a regatta on the Lake of Veere, Zeeland, The Netherlands, held on July 16th, 2022.
In 2020 and 2021 such an event wasn't held because of the Covid-19 (Corona) pandemic.
The regatta is organized by the 'Stichting Behoud Hoogaars' (SBH), a foundation run by volunteers in order to reconstruct ancient Dutch wooden fishing boats. The participants of the regatta aren't only owners of a such reconstructed boat however, but are the owners of different types of ancient wooden boats, as shown here.
In order to determine who's the winner of this regatta, the participants have to sail several times a 'track'. The start and end of such a track is marked with a buoy. After passing the buoy, one has to sail in the opposite direction. In some of my images of this series therefore one can see that some boats are sailing in the opposite direction. Often the boat has to 'cross' several times the track because a sailing boat can't sail straight against the the wind. The boat that comes first to the finish (after sailing the determined number of tracks) is not automatically the winner. Because the boats vary in size and have different sail area, first must be determined, after a complicated calculation, who really is the winner.
