This sculpture, called 'De Bron' (The Source), was created by Delphine Courtillot, an artist coming from Amsterdam, The Netherlands, on the occasion of the comtemporary art festival Façade 2022. The Façade 2022 sculptures can be seen until November 6th, 2022 in Middelburg, Zeeland, The Netherlands. Never before has Delphine created an artwork for the public area. During the summer months of Façade 2022, her installation 'De Bron' is located on the Helm, the square at University College Roosevelt.

She made five whimsical pillars, sand-colored with bright accents, which are most akin to a geological formation in a stalactite cave. Delphine says: "Should you encounter them in Middelburg, should you see something like that, then I hope it gets you thinking. For my location I've explicitly chosen the university square. Many young people pass by, I like that. Perhaps I can reach them, perhaps they will stop for a minute to think about the future of the earth. Because that's necessary. We have entered the anthropogenic, the geological age of man. Now, more than ever, we need to think about the earth in a generous way."

I do appreciate the location, her pillars contrasting favorably with the pillars in the square. As an artist myself, in college, I always tried to make some sort of statement, some serious, some a bit questionable, many just flat out confusing. When the source of the inspiration is your mind and heart, there's no end to what you can create and get away with. I'm quite certain that the effect this piece is having on the students, at least to some extent, and likely because I sense the Netherlands is a more cerebral country than the U.S. (we are unfortunately all about "I want my internet connection right naaaoooowwww, waaaahhh!"), is what she hoped for.
