i know it looks like a sunset, but this was take 2-3 hours later. there was a heavy fog in the river valley that was just lifting, and all the city lights were reflecting off of it. Adding to the interesting lighting was a full moon overhead, giving the surreal lighting to the foreground rocks

great image, really like that you have it with plenty of contrast, yet still low & muted. gorgeous colors too.

95% things about this image is awesome. The light, white balance and focus all up to a good standerd. But my friend you have screwed up the horizon and that makes me dizzy :) It is one of the most critical points in landscape photography take care of it next time or just do some editing now and fix it. Good luck.

Excellent shot Carl, I especially like those images with star trails, so this is tops for me. I agree that the horizon is a bit off horizontal and you can almost guarantee being unsuccesful at it when it is dark.

i know its off horizontal, but i really didnt want to crop much off, as is the case when you rotate the horizon, and i didnt fancy a big clone job either, so i just left it, hopefully the rest of the image makes up for it

Well as to the horizon line, it looks a bit strange to me, but if we look at the trees which usually create vertical lines everything seems OK. The photo definitely is mood-inspiring, a big plus! But sorry Carl this photo looks a bit surreal to me. I cannot believe the place really looked like that. This is just unbelievable.

Ahoi Carl,
this landscape looks like a dream for me.....a good one :) I remember only dark nights....without orange light. Maybe I have to look through my orange sunglasses.....or to give your pic a place on my mac.
My best to you,

I don't think the slighty off horizontal distracts from the image at all. I too don't like the cropping that has to come with rearranging the image! Love the few star trails you've caught too!

100% the best . I don`t know how I`ve missed this but I am so glad I found it. What a capture. Normally, I`m big on horizons not being straight (normally if it`s 0.12 off I think it should have been fixed) but in this case I think it looks so right. Thank you so much for sharing this, words like wonderful and stunning are just not enough. I`m sorry I can only give it 10/10.

Excellent! I see the horizon line has been mentioned already, so I won't harp on that. It's the only thing I could be critical of in this image. The multiple light sources make this really pop for me. Well done, and add me to what is probably a long list of those wishing they had something similar to shoot.

So serene and otherworldly, the mist on the horizon gives the impression of something approaching. I love the patches of snow breaking up the scene.

I wouldn't say your horizon is 'wrong'. It adds to the overall 'martian' feel of the shot.
I imagine this was a long-shutter exposure perhaps?
Great shot, love the feel, amazing composition. Well done

Looking at this I can see there is much I can learn in taking low light shots. The star streaks show that this was taken over a significant period -- something that I've never been able to do successfully with my camera. Yes, the horizon is off, but I don't know if leveling it would improve the composition, the slight tilt lends "weight" to the rocks on the right. If it was level, it would look off balanced.

I agree with lots of folks that you captured a great low light image, congrats on doing something really difficult. The horizon problem is evident but can be corrected with a simple, free program like Picassa. I used it to correct this problem and have added your photo to my favorites.

I just saw this on the front page. great colors and lighting. only problem I have with the off-balance horizon is that it's a bit disorienting if one stares too long. in terms of overall capture, this one's a winner.
