We went for a walk on Saturday and my wife spotted this growing on a tree limb. Not sure what it is but it was only the size of a dime. I took one photo and saw the red dots so I got as close as I could and took this shot. No tripod just good timing to catch it in focus. The red dots are smaller than the head of a pin. They were not visible to the naked eye... Well at least this old man's eyes. Also not the tiny needles. Fuji S2 Nikor 105mm macro 400 ISO on a cloudy day.

I like this. It sort of gives the impression that it's an underwater plant with the rich blues around it. Interesting wallpaper.

I was just thinking the very same thing as B.J., that this looks like something deep beyond in the ocean/sea. I usually look then read. I am glad I did!

You have more steady hands then me shooting this without a tripod. ;) My best bet is that it is some sort of lichen. (Especially considering where you found it.) I've seen similar things to those red dots on other species.

It looks like a moss we have here but wrong color and a little vicious looking. Some pretty things just look a little more alarming when you get down into their world. For being outdoors and in a tree you certainly got a good shot without a lot of background clutter.

No doubt it's some kind of fruticose lichen... The red spot is a spore-producing body.

Ah, this is an antique. 2005 - that was a good year. In any case, this photograph is still excellent.
