Some years ago an international magazine asked me to descibe (in words) what photography (art-like) meant to me. It took me 13 lines of express myself in words. Later I started to "translate" these sentences "back" into a visual. "Tortures the Mind and Talent" is one of them. There is not to much "photoshop" used in creating this picture because I wanted to express myself in photography and not to much "manipulation". Photoshop was only used to "break the chain", otherwise its a "one-shot-photo" I hope you like it. At at the moment I have visualised four "sentences" (4 photographes) but I'm not convinced (yet) if I want to upload the other three. "Tortures the Mind and Talent" is, in my point of view, the less "dark" of this serie. For those of you who are interested in my wordly expression... The complete lines are: The Eye of the Beholder - Polished to Lens - To Become Voyeur - Ripened to Virtuoso - To Enjoy the Eye - Creates Images and Bonds - Creates Unity and Disunity - Photographic Lens - Become Frontiere Between People - Moment of Movement - Hours of Tranquillity - Between Days end Entities - Tortures the Mind and Talent. ©Evert van Kuik

There is a lot of power in this photo for sure! Not only what the man is doing, breaking the chain with his force, but the whole drama of the black and white image, going from dark on the left side to the grey on the right. The muscles he is using, and of course the mental attitude has to be there also. Your photography is so unique and it's very nice to have you and your photos here in caedes. Thank you so much. I will always look forward to more of yours soon.Verena

Very good and artistic image Evert. Have however some troubles to understand your narrative as it differs from mathematics, lol. I'm honest by saying that Verena's (proper ?) explanation is more clear to me.

Cornelius was here either to enjoy your image or say 'thank you' for your interest in my gallery. In the first case, please CLICK HERE to see my work!

I agree with Cornelius. I agree with Verena, too. This is a very well composed image, and makes me think of a modern day sci-fi movie. I must say that I find your framing of the picture very unique, with the use of electrical tape. I don't think I would ever have thought of that. Very nice presentation, Evert.

Hi "guys" (and hi Verena... You have to understand that this photo is a visualisation from just a part of the "poem" which is in itselves an "ode" (is this a correct english word?) to photography as an art-expression. Difficult for me to express this in english.
Nevertheless I feel honored that you all like this photograph (you did, didn't you?).
It is nice to hear that some of my work is appriciated. Again, thank your for all your kind words. EvK

The tension you created within frame is not only palpable ... indeed, visually tangible as well.

And inverting (/rotating the canvas) the frame of reference of your photo ... was a stroke of artistic genius. (Yes, I am allowed to use superlatives in commments ... it's in my contract. ;o))

Very ... very nice work. Evert. If I may be bold and address you by first name here.

Wonderfully executed concept, down to your final presentation to us.

The pursuit of artistic expression is a life-long work in progress. And seemingly echoed and interpreted by me, with respect to that of the accompanying words in your narrative and on the note of your presentation.

Thank you for sharing your talents with us.

Sincerely appreciated by this viewer ... and dare I say (and will) all of those that view your work(s ... <--- 'nice' photos have a place, too, methinks) posted.

And suffice to say ... the '+favs' thing is an understatement.

Hi Les, thank you for your comment.
Because this picture, as I (tried to) explaind in the discription, I believe you do understand the impact of, not only the photo itself, but as a visualisation of the “poem”. The way you explained to me what the impact is for you, seeing this photo means a lot to me. Maybe yiu can tell me what Praetor means, (I’m a novice here at Caedes).
“Tortures the Mind and Talent” is just one out of my serie “The Eye and The Beholder and maybe the most easiest to “understand”. Again Les, thank you, you’re too kind. Withe regards, Evert van Kuik

Well, first let me say ... I think it would be great to be able to view all four in the series that you completed thus far.

"The Eye of the Beholder - Polished to Lens - To Become Voyeur - Ripened to Virtuoso - To Enjoy the Eye - Creates Images and Bonds - Creates Unity and Disunity - Photographic Lens - Become Frontiere Between People - Moment of Movement - Hours of Tranquillity - Between Days end Entities - Tortures the Mind and Talent."

/\ Very poetic, Evert.

Think you've managed to capture in prose, the 'workflow' we each experience in creating the 'art' that we share on the site here. Or, otherwise.

Praetor?

To keep it simple, go to this page ... "The Caedes.net Senate"
... which, once you click on the various 'titles' found in the text and under the usernames, you will find a description of each.

In my case, 'Praetor' means ... 'will work for cookies'. :oD

(/\ Lil' bit of an inside joke, that I've inadvertently propagated myself with numerous, and hopefully, humorous references/inferences to that of baked good morsels. Bit of levity, that's all.)

And you are most welcome. :o)

"Your "status" deserves a personal message."

Lol. No, not necessary ... in fact, and as I have said many times, I would rather 'you' put that time towards creating.

I won't be offended, nor take any personal affront from not having received some words in a personal message. Truly ... and sincerely. :o)

Had this one in the VB and was impressed!!

There is a lot of power in this picture, not only on the body/person, but also breaking the chain with his power/force.

The b/w makes it look dramatic..in my eyes that is ofcourse....

And the tape on the frame is very creative.

+favs for me :o)

I love the flip of the chain as evidence of movement at the instant of breaking free. Once again I cant say enough about your lighting helping set mood as he moves from shadow into light as if he's been reaching for it for ages.
