INSIDE STORY (automotive) From 1991 till 2000 I "did" a lot of automotive for many car manufacturers. Studio photography as well on many locations in Europe Since photography was still analog (digital high res. was not available at that time) everything was done on film with large format cameras. So was this picture. Shot on a technical camera (10"x 8"). The shot is not digitally altered or retouched. Analog was simple, what you see on polaroid is what you get on film. Old school photography. The reflection of the truck is in fact "produced" by water. We made a basin 15cm deep using black plastic material and some 100.000 liters of water. Truck was placed on some bricks just touching the water surface in order to get the wheels "free". We used Tungsten light (about 10x 5kW spots and an even number of 2kW spots). All lights were bounced against a massive white ceiling and reflection wall except some for the background. A shot like this usually takes more than a week with a crew of some 5 assistants. The insert are not taken during this shoot and only give you an idea of the studio. Although this picture is also from almost 15 years ago, I hope it will give you an idea how things were done before there was any digital technique. Although maybe not the best picture for Caedes, I hope you like it anyway.

Evert...how very interesting!! I like all the facts on how this photo was taken and also the things about the truck itself. I enjoy the inserts that show the studio and love those other cars. Those colours are fantastic. It's amazing how much goes into the preparation of a piece of art like this. It must feel wonderful to have been part of this, of being the biggest part, taking the photo! The auto industry has come such a long long way. To show a Semi truck this way is really fun to see. I do so appreciate all your information and art work. And I think it's our delight to have you on caedes. It's different and great to look at. I appreciate your composition and your sharing all your photos with us this far. Verena

If you have a talent, use it in every which way possible. Don't hoard it. Don't dole it out like a miser. Spend it lavishly, like a millionaire intent on going broke

Ok than....

Like the shot, the lighting as background stands for the horsepower of the truck.
The lighting on the truck is just enough.

The reflection is really spot on.

And considering the photo is 15 years old, the quality is still superb.

Well, I can't figure out how I missed this, Evert. Sure is a gorgeous collage of your shots. I love that Semi and the reflections. The clarity and colors are outstanding. Beautiful work.

O_o? I'm so glad that I won't be a professional photographer. A week to set up?! With 5 other people to pay salaries to?! And who's paying you? You've got a hard life, and here I was thinking that I had it bad. Anyway, pretty: I have a soft spot for trucks. And your story gives the work a whole new dimension :) . I have to ask, though, did you guys need a crane to put that thing on the bricks?! And were there concerns that a column of bricks might not hold?

I love the lighting you accomplished in this shot. You and your team made that truck shine! Thanks for the background story too.

Wow! Now that is something I would never have thought could be accomplished with film. Wow. No wonder the old pros tend to be sharp about the digital era-they see a bunch of amateurs running around with their cameras, and trying to duplicate a master's work with Photoshop. I have learned that Photoshop will never be as good as an unaltered photo taken right, and this is the best way possible to do it. Intensive? Yes, perfect? As close as possible for sure. :)
Thank you for sharing this and have a great day!
