The steam pump station at Mildura was built in 1891 to pump water from the Murray River and was the first stage of a grand scheme to irrigate over 100,000 hectares around Mildura. It operated successfully until 1959 when it was replaced with electric pumps nearby. It was recommissioned in 1995 by a group of local enthusiasts and now operates on school holidays and special occasions.

The old steam engines were a marvel of invention in their time Frank. Very powerful! It appears they have been restored and look great.

I bet this did the job at getting the water to the crops back in the day. A great picture and piece of history!
