.....the picture speaks for itself! :) ....an interesting gentleman, who was only too pleased to let me take his photograph - what a character!! We talked for a while - he was from Rumania and living in Rome - he obviously had a deep affection for his little friend! I decided to leave the posts and pillars in the photograph, as I think they add to the mood of the image rather than detract and are part of his environment.

Patti, that is a precious capture. I love the expression on that man's face. In my many years of trucking, I saw lots of homeless people with the only companionship available in a very lonly world-a pet. Great work.

Great capture at about1:30 p.m. I would guess judging from the shadows. He looks very compassionate because he's wearing his wedding ring and it's obvious he loves that dog. I love people photo's and this one is great. Very nice Patti.

Patti ... as a dog lover all my life, this picture just stole my heart. One of the best "Human Interest" posts I've seen at Caedes. There's nothing you could have changed to make this any better. The mans expression say's it all. Simply marvelous and a favorite for me.

...and he did not try to sell me any Rolex Jerry! lol! He was very interesting and was telling me how he came to be in Rome and how long he had been there. He was happy just to chat. I was in Rome last week and had in mind that someone living on the streets would make a good entry for the contest. When I walked past this man, I knew I had to take his photograph so I asked if he minded. He was more than happy for me to do that. He was very happy with the photographs I took and looked at the images on my camera.

Too damn good for words it is. I might have to concede this contest before even starting.

There's something about this that really reminds me of paintings. It's in his profile and the expression on his face - like one of the Dutch masters I think but I couldn't tell you which. What a joy to see a well put together people shot here. I hope it does well for you Fogz.

What a wonderful character shot of this gentleman and his dog.
Yes,it indeed speaks for itself. The look on his face, the hand on his buddy and he even has a bit of a cover or rug for his doggie to lay on. I imagine it was good to talk to this man. Photos like this speak so much louder than those with no person on them. Thank you for a thought provoking photo..Verena

Would you please send me a PM and tell me: Did you take the photo first or did you speak with him first? Did you tell him, why you take the photo or did you lie about "just trying it"? And did you give him money? I wanna do something like this also, but feel like abusing the poor. But maybe I should not do, since I do not feel like I am able to top this shot.

Sabine, see further up the thread - I have added a a comment about talking to the man before I took his photograph. I gave him a few euros - he was more than happy for me to take his photograph and was happy just to chat to someone who was interested in him for a few minutes. He seemed like a very intelligent man - it is sad he was on the streets. If you use your instinct and be polite, then you are not abusing anyone's privacy, especially if you ask them first. He even turned to stroke his dog while I took his photograph - which showed how much he cared about his dog.

Hi Patti
This is a very nice photograph You've entered for the competition but I was surprised You went all the way to Rome for this photographic subject !!
Manchester has so many more down, and outs that would make great subjects with real grit appeal too. While this gent is clean, well dressed, and smoking a tailored cig, perhaps he's a conman !!

Great photo and shows a lot of heart and soul in it. The slight touch to his companion shows so much emotion that can not be seen but is felt by the viewer. When a picture can stir something in the viewer then you know "ya did good girl". I live in Mexico where our animals are not so lucky. I'll remember this picture for a long time.
