We assume that birds are instinctual flyers and for the most part that is true. What we don't realize is that flight takes practice and conditioning. In the image above this young Osprey is completing one of its first practice flights. Before returning to the nest, it tried to land in the top of one tree, but called it off. It then tried one or two more times before deciding to return to the nest. Even that did not work out as expected as seen above. Its sibling had to duck and take cover to avoid being knocked out of the next. If you look closely the landing birds talons are actually touching its siblings feathers, meaning that if if did not duck it surely would have been a strike.
