We assume that birds are instinctual flyers and for the most part that is true. What we don't realize is that flight takes practice and conditioning. In the image above this young Osprey is completing one of its first practice flights. Before returning to the nest, it tried to land in the top of one tree, but called it off. It then tried one or two more times before deciding to return to the nest. Even that did not work out as expected as seen above. Its sibling had to duck and take cover to avoid being knocked out of the next. If you look closely the landing birds talons are actually touching its siblings feathers, meaning that if if did not duck it surely would have been a strike.

What a sight that must have been for you! This is the kind of scene I could sit and watch all day. Awesome capture of this osprey in "practice" flight.

You don't post ofter but when you do it is a winner Garrett. Great action shot. I thought it was striking until I read your narrative.

I would bet that its sibling was not happy. But dang it made for a great capture. Great going on being quick enough to catch it so clearly and with such detail.

Great shot! I love the energy captured in this photo; it reminds me of the pictures in the national geographics book I loved as a child.

This should be straight into the permanent gallery and onto a cover of a National Geographic. [I saw my first osprey this year, although the fishing guide was less than pleased.]
