You may not know but, I volunteer at the Ojai Raptor Center. The Ojai Raptor Center (ORC)raises, treats and ultimately releases injured/orphaned Raptors and other animals. Last year alone they released over 1300 animals. I personally have raised possums and barn owls for them. Twice a year the ORC holds opens houses as a fund raiser, where people can tour their facility, view some of the many animals housed there and learn about animals. I operate the "Skin Table". The skin table exhibits Raptors and a few other birds that have been taxidermied,(museum study skins). I teach people about raptors and answer questions about how to tell the difference between the various birds of prey. Annually the Raptor Center sells calenders to raise money for the facility, (which is totally volunteer operated). The company Pantagonia is their major sponsor. The 2015 calender features 9 images that I captured. Only three are not mine. If you want to help a good cause and see some more of my work you can purchase a calender at www.ojairaptorcenter.org.

Nice to meet you!

On my way to a Geology degree, I took a side elective (for fun) in Ornithology taught by Dr. Heinz Meng. Meng is best known for his groundbreaking work to save the peregrine falcon from the brink of extinction. By the early 1970s peregrines had vanished from the eastern United States and Canada, Meng was the first to successfully breed the avian predators in captivity and reintroduce them to the wild.

Meng managed to breed two peregrines from British Columbia and nursed the chicks himself in the kitchen. "Falconers thought I was nuts," he admits. "No one in America had ever successfully bred peregrines." He even trained them to hunt pigeons. The professor released the first pair of fledglings; appropriately named Adam and Eve; from a Meng-made aerie atop the faculty building in 1974. Dr. Meng is still alive and active at 90 yrs old!

I think it must be extremely interesting and gratifying to be involved in such a worthy cause, and I'll have to check out the calendar.

Edit: I checked out the store, but I only saw the 2014 calendar available. Maybe they will release the new one soon?

Very nice to meet you, Garrett. I'd love to volunteer at a place like this & is always good to give informative info about different species of raptors as well as other birds. There are several places in my area that are dedicated to birds. The most popular bird in the state is "Alice the Great Horned Owl" (rescued) & she is featured at a local nature center. Because of her Great Horned Owls are now protected in Minnesota.

Your bird photo's are always an inspiration. Thanks for sharing this one & congrat's on the calendar.
