Europeans take their art to different levels that we Yanks, it seems. When buildings are constructed, detail to artistic features abound, such as this building. Here in the US, my impression is things are reduced to very clean lines (the Frank Lloyd Wright effect?), and cost expediencies. But on this building you can see minute attention to detail in a variety of artistic mediums: iron, brink, bronze, etc. That isn't to say US architecture can't be seen as artistic, but it does seem as though we have lost the human aspect of architectural art. Frankfurt, Germany; June, 2018.

Excellent capture accompanied with a good and interesting narrative, Ted.
I'm an European, but I must say that the front side of my house isn't that artistic. Meets more the US approach, ☺ !

I googled the Standesamt Ortsgericht that appears on the sign in the lower left to see if I could determine the date of this architecture, but I see no date that could reach back to renaissance times, when I suspect the structure was built. That being said I have seen lots of architecture and artifacts from our past that are loaded with artistic details, even mundane household items. While it is true that the Danish Moderne style has infected much of our fabrications, the same can be said of a strong percentage of the newer European architecture, conspicuously museums. I could stand in front of the very modern Museum Brandhorst in Munich and see all I want in a couple minutes. Here, however, I would likely bring a chair because I would be here a while.

Many town and cities throughout Europe has prime examples of what you mention. Prague is the ultimate example of Gothic architecture.
