some of you were dismayed at the branch behind the royal tern. i had never thought of it as anything else but an additional unimportant object in the photo. here's the old guy without the "object". now you have a choice! thanks for comments. i''m curious to hear what you think. i'm away right now and have very limited computer time. please forgive my not commenting on your latest uploads.

Outstanding post work Jen. I like this one better, though I didn't find the tree branch that distracting. My philosophy is ... if nature put it there then that is the way it is suppose to be. That's just me .. a nature lover. Very nicely done.

A terrific cloning job for sure. As you said, I didn't pay much attention to the branch in the first post. It's not a perfect world, there will be branches. This post is just as good as the first and that means it's great!

i was so pleased to get this in the VB
NOW ITS A 10!

its defo benefited from the removal of that distraction ... nicely done

great portrait
do i have to list why? ;)
ok ok
heres the good points :-
light, contrast, colour and its saturation, exposure youve caught a super dynamic range esp on the bird

composition generally + use of the water horizon to emphasize the head
humans always look to the eyes

now has a non confusing diffuse background

the lighting on things like the underside and the wooden branch give us lots of fine muted detail

though it doesnt take it off a 10 mark it might do with a slight catchlight in the eye to set it right off but its no biggie :)

generally lovely :)

and the bad points? :-
its not my photo :P~

I didn't see the original Jeenie. However this is a really wonderful capture of this guy. I have a lot of trouble photographing birds. The little buggers never sit still for me. Anyway, this is a beautiful capture and very well composed.

He'd make a great weathervane! Sure looks like he held his breath while you shot this image Jen - so sharp. Great color and contrast. Excellent detail throughout. I might have positioned him just a bit lower - When too high it can make one feel like the subject is being squished. The lighting is a little off - would be a bit more pleasing with a nice catch-light in the eye. Otherwise perfect. anne :-)

No dismay from the first one. We can be so critical and must remember it is a photo. I liked the first photo as it was. Not too many as crisp as this one.

I must agree with .ted302. The first image gave the bird a sense of place, now the bird looks a little lonely.
This image is still very good, as it is one focuses straight on the main subject and doesn't invite one to explore the rest of the image.
