My son took this photo and he is a thirteen year old amateur photographer. He has a non-SLR camera, and our whole family is amazed by his work. He found this bee resting on a flower(we don't know what the flower is called. Sorry!). The results were fantastic. This is the best of many pictures that he took. This picture was not doctored in any way, it was only cropped. Any tips/tricks on nature photography will be welcomed for him.

I don't think I was taking pictures at 13 .. my family just assumed I wasn't interested .. my mother, on the other hand, used to stop the car and lay in the road to get a poppy under a barb-wire fence .. so, needless to say, you've got me beat

don't let any of my advice suggest you haven't done well

If your camera has an aperture-priority setting .. using a wide aperture, like f2.8, will blur the distant background more than you have here, (provided it is far enough away), isolating your subject AND give you a fast shutter speed for stopping action ... the focus range will be very tight, and you may be forced to keep your subject centered (as you have) .. keep in mind: having your subject off-center can create a more memorable image (your choice)

when your background is 'identifiable', your viewer's eyes will look at the subject, then move their attention to the background .. the subject is where you want their attention in a shot such as this .. show your audience only what you want them to see

as you view images @ caedes, save images that inspire you, that teach you, to a special folder.. and use these images as self-assignments .. try to copy their emotion

This is a very good picture for any amateur photographer let alone a thirteen year old. The focus is great and the colour is good. I agree that the background could be a bit more blurred and if I was submitting this image I would have cropped more off the right-hand side to put the bee off-centre (look up various threads about the Rule of Thirds).
