Rules broken: (1)No rule of thirds as far as I can see... (2)Conflicting leading lines (to some extent). (3)Lack of well defined focus of interest or "main subject" for that matter. (4)Failure to use the settings to frame the image properly. (5)Definitely bad cropping. (6)Failure of keeping simplicity, distracting elements at the edges. (7) Bad colors. (Might be subjective... I have a strong urge to make a slight correction to the blue-cast of the image but will refrain to do so since it was specified in the contest rules.) (8)Partially out of focus in a way that serves no artistic purpose (rather the opposite). (9)Sort of centered composition. (Could be a matter of debate...) I couldn't find better shots to submit right now. If I find or make a "better" rule breaker I'll take one of my submissions down I guess.

Not having any idea whatsoever about any rules [those in photography including ...] I like this image very very much. With or without any rules. 10/10 in the booth just now !
PS: You have not taken this picture this year, have you ? Just being envious ... Boris and I love winter, frost and snow !!!

Thanks! :) Perhaps I only bent the rules and did not brake them enough? I shot them last year in november.

The texture in this is remarkable. I find it difficult to believe you haven't applied it in Photoshop. A sure candidate for first place...

Thanks for the kind words, Paul and Sam. :) I'm glad you liked it. I'm itching real bad Sam, to correct my usual stuff... I guess most are not that bothered about a slight blue tint in the shadows... ^_^ I have a series of shots from this day that didn't cut it in my original selection but is at least equal to this and my other submission in this contest. Paul, no new stuff in the pipeline I'm afraid. Perhaps in a couple of weeks, but you never know... Thanks for the support at any rate!

^_^ Thanks! I was thinking of nr (10) "Generally bad balance in the composition." But that is just a reiteration of several of the former points I would say...

I would honestly never have submitted it if not for this contest I try to regulate my submissions to the finest cut, but now I've started looking at similar "mishaps", considering submission, lets see if some of you will like them too...

The only negative I see in this is the focus issue, and that's debatable. I would love to see this image after you have manipulated to your tastes. A very strong, Klas, image without any manipulation.

Thank you Alexis. I'm not sure the difference would be that dramatic... I have certain things I always do to my shots to make them look more natural in colors and lighting. I guess the preferences for that requirement could vary substantially... ^_^ I'm really glad you liked it at any rate!

Who cares about rules? It's like in music: the rules are meant to be broken. Well done!

Rules mean nothing to me when you are presenting one of your wonderful abstract in nature shots. This one is no exception. The darkness and the blue still works even if I would personally remove it for a different presentation. It's still well balanced throughout. Good luck.

Thanks BJ! I'm glad you like it still. :) I guess I could have added to the list of broken rules that it is darker exposed then most would have done it. ^_^ That would be (11) in that case... lol! But seriously, I would not have liked it brighter. Most of that blue tint I could have done without though.

You are among my favourites in this contest. Great shot, I wonder how the hell did you take such a clear macro shot? Best luck!

Thank you for the kind words! My macros are as a rule a result of making up to 70 (on a good day just 10-20, on a bad hundreds...) slight variations on similar angles on the same or slightly different subjects. In this shot the most parts of the subject is in the very short depth of field that I had to use depending on the lighting conditions.

Up to a certain point it's about luck the rest is partly about being stubborn (like you can be when you really loving doing this) and partly some sense on what might make a good subject / framing / lighting setting. ^_^ (And the latter part is the easy one... And the easiest one to train oneself on... ^_^)

Don't know anything of the rules you broke as well. For me this is a marvelous picture showing so well the hoarfrost details. How many shots did you take? Added it to my favs.

It is an amazing picture. It reminds me of early winter at my house. When I see it it reminds me of it be late fall and a cold morning when you walk out your front do and can see your breath. I love it!
