Wow Kristof....Great colors and what a cool subject. I like the reflections off his back. and the antenna are outstandingly sharp. wonderful job...Bill
Kristof, not only are the subjects in your macros interesting and extremely sharp, but you also manage to get the perfect background every time. Seriously, do you sedate these critters and hand place them just where you want them? Also, and this is not a rhetorical question...how do you get them so sharp? I believe you said you use a 150 macro, so I think it helps not having to be right on top of them, but how many throw away shots do you take before you get one this good? Do you use a fill flash? TELL US YOUR SECRETS!
thx all , for the kind comments.
Jeff ; sedation is not an option , but i go out early when its not hot yet (insects are much less active then ). I don't use a flash (besides i don't have a ring flash wich is the only way to get good flash light for a macro ; or you have to work with refector screens ).
Always use a tripod ! And have patience. First you got to know your eqepment , wich f to use for a nice backgroud and to get the entire thing in focus (that took a while for me). Then play with over and under exposure.
the way i learned this is ; first concentrate on getting all pics in focus and sharp ; then when you manage to do that with almost every shot , look for composition (what would look good ) , then look for color.
And i must say , the more talented people then me on this site remain an inspiration for me ; look what you find attractive in their work and try to match that (but don't copy , devellope your own style ). What do you like about sertain pic ?(composition wise ) look at fractals , what colors work well ?.
Look at detail.
In the beginning , 70 % of wy pics were no good. Now i am happy with 80 % .
Work in RAW ; do some sharpening , play with the settings.
hope this explains a bit.
Kristof.
Kristof, you truely are a master of macro! This shot is outstanding. The composition with the simple glittering well-focused bug on the diagonal leaf couldn't be better. The colours and the lighting make it such a cheerful capture. I love it and .... and add it to my favourites.
