Mount Desert Island, Maine, USA (Acadia National Park). In 1604, the French explorer Samuel Champlain gave the island its current name, l'Isles des Monts-déserts or Mount Desert Island because the mountain tops were without trees because the glacial retreats had stripped the soil from them, leaving only exposed pink granite. The rocky shorelines are a mix of varied colored granite. Enjoy!
