Juneau, Alaska, USA. Because of the remoteness of many towns on the coast of Alaska, the waterways are the means of transportation. The Alaska Ferry services the panhandle towns. Here one of the ferries passes a glacier. Juneau, the capital of the state, is accessible only by water or air. There are no roads to it. In part it is due to the city's remoteness. More so, however, is that it is surrounded by 1500 square miles of ice fields that feed a number of glaciers, including this one that probably has a name. The 'speed stripes' in the glacier, the two dark lines, are comprised of rock ground off of the mountains higher up. Each line represents the merging of glaciers. In the case of this glacier, three smaller ones merged along the route to the coastline. Enjoy!
