Looks like like you got yourself a darn nice shot of a male "Downy" or "Hairy" woodpecker. Can't gauge the size in the pic. Can tell you this ... I like the capture you made of him upside down under that limb ... color and clarity not bad at all. Well worth the posting Terri

Well Terri, considering the weather conditions and the bird being on the shaded side of the branch I think you did a good job there. Nicely composed too.
I had a Greater Spotted on my nut feeder the other day - the first for 10 months - but, of course, by the time I got the camera it had gone;o(
Cheers,
Steve.

Now, why can't I do that? Hang upside down and dig for my supper? I think this is a really nice post and for anyone to get that close to a woodpecker is a challenge. All we have around here are pileated woodpeckers, but they don't like people very much and stay to themselves out in the woods.. Don't apologize for this one.. :)PJ

That's one nice 'n' hairy pecker babe!! Yes, a wee fuzzy as the focus seems more so on the branch to the left, but, hey...we get the idea and understand!! I think the colorings / markings are superb on this feathery friend!! And the placement / angle is to die for...totaly perfect!!

Ain't nuttin' like a pecker hangin' upside down, is there?!?! 8~O

That's as close as I'll ever get to one of these little guys. Interesting angle. You'd think he would be upright so he wouldn't have to hang on so hard.

I know what you mean Terri when you have to enhance color because of overcast lighting when shooting birds. I have done myself and not quite as good if lighting was sunny day. But, saying that, you have done a good kob here...I really like the positioning of woodpecker. You know I hear these guys in the bush and I say to myself they must have one hecka of a headache :))...gerry.
