Sword Fern is known in a number of Vancouver Island and Puget Sound languages as 'pala-pala plant', because it was used in a traditional game known as you guessed it, pala-pala. This game, played by children, involved seeing who could pull the most leaflets off a leaf in a single breath while saying "pala"with each one. On a more useful note they were used to cure diarrhea!

I must say I like this better than my fern shot, and pala-pala sounds like a fun game for children of all ages, such as me :). Nice and distinct capture Darryl and another great explanation~

Wow! Gorgeous fantasy-like scene here! Love the ferns. And to top it off, the stuff cures diarrhea! What more could one ask for? (Do you have a photo of anything that cures constipation, maybe?) >^..^<

A very pretty pic - I think we have a fern like that in Oz- called "fishbone" fern. So unromantic compared to "Pala-Pala"!

Terrific lighting Darryl. I agree with Mum42, it does look like our fishbone fern.

What thriving beauties these are and of course you've captured them in all their glory. Suitable for framing and no question which room to hang them in! ;0

After your comment that these grow to 1.5 m, I think they are definitely not what we have in Oz! I think that they must be quite spectacular!

Well done, ferns are awesome and this picture is now my background. The only ferns that grow near my house are pinner. Need more fat ferns.
