This fawn is quietly guarding the graves of the men and women who died while fighting for our freedom. The headstones in this section are for veterans of World War I (1914-1918). We must remember that freedom is not free! (taken in Jefferson Barrracks National Cemetery)

I had to come back again...I was looking at this image on my desktop today and suddenly noticed the date on the stone nearest the deer...is that not highly ironic in view of today's date?...either that or you have some pretty smart deer down there OR you have quite a way with them, lol...that's amazing to me.:Pat.

I looked at this piece yesterday but didn't have the time to comment. Anyhow. There is some artefacts from sharpening I believe (could be heavy cropping too, but this usually looks slightly different) but this is usually only an issue for me personally. I find many use sharpening (on-camera or in post-processing) much more then I would think proper. My issue with this is that it creates an effect that almost makes the piece put together by retouching, like a cut and paste collage. I.e. the contrast between different element of the photo gets too sharp and makes it "more 2D" if you know what I mean.

This small issue put aside it's a super shot. The exposure makes the most of the lighting settings, the subject is perfectly placed and the foreground and background is so well composed that it is close to perfect.

Hi there, this is magical!
You know that there was a lady in this week who is the mother in law of a friend at work. Her son, my friend's husband passed away this winter. She was in and bought a polyresin deer to lay at the gravestone! I will certainly have to tell her about this picture that you have captured. I thought at first that it was a polyresin you have there until I took a closer look at the hairs on his chinny chin chin, lol.

Mimi, my husband is a veteran of not one but three wars..Korean, WW2 and Viet Nam. I was looking at this picture when he walked into the room. I said, "Come here honey, ya gotta see this." As soon as he had studied it a few seconds, he began to cry.

Yes ... wow.

The editorial appeal alone of this image speaks volumes. This shot really needs to be shown on a larger stage than our beloved site. I would strongly urge you to look into the prospects of getting ... and forgive the unintended pun here ... more exposure for this image Mimi.

It does indeed tell a story. And allows, as all great photos do, the viewer to add their own meaning and interpretation.

Wow, I get chills looking at this ... and that ... is definitely a good thing. My mind races when I look at this full screen. Evocative, emotive and thought provoking. Powerful stuff.

I am more than willing to give some credence to Pats' (mesmerized) observations that 'other' forces were at work to conspire to present you with this photographic opportunity.

And again ... add your narrative ... most excellent. Most excellent, indeed.

Not being able to see the year on that headstone, I'd be willing to bet Walter Snyder died at Gettysburg and was buried here by his family instead of at the battle site. The "July 3" on the stone is the giveaway. By the way, catching this fawn placidly sitting in front of the headstones makes for a massively unique and beautiful shot, Meems. I realize it was four years ago but this photo is perfect for supporting the idea that Art Council photos shouldn't be new ones only... that some older ones merit the same treatment.
