On Monday, a 22 y/o firefighter was ambushed & shot while stepping off a firetruck to extinguish a vehicle fire which was set as a trap for the first responders. Two police officers were also wounded in the attack. Ryan's funeral today was comprised of 350 firetrucks, ambulances, over 100 police vehicles, plus chief vehicles and private vehicles. It stretched over 7 miles. There were 1200+ firefighters from all over the country in attendance. There are no words to describe the emotions. It has been a sad week indeed :(

How terrible Mimi. What is this world coming to? My heart goes out to you because I know you have sons that are emergencey responders. A firefighter and a policeman I believe. When something happens to someone in the bigger family of emergency responders it happens to everyone. Great photo and tribute. God bless.

I hope you don't mind but I provided this link so everyone could read the story.

"One of the firefighters who also spoke at the funeral Mass said, "We should remember Ryan, not for the way he died, but for the way he lived life."

And then that same firefighter said, as if speaking directly to Hummert: "What happened that day did not define you as a hero. You were already a hero the day you stepped on that truck." "

Rest in peace, Ryan.

There are no words for me to express how this type of incident makes me feel. It is Horrible that the people who are there to serve US, no matter who we are or what we do. With no regards for there own safety, can be attacked this way. You have done a beautiful job is paying respect to those who put there lives on the line every day and I salute you. Beautiful job.

This deeply touches my heart. We are truly a large brother and sisterhood of emergency responders. During my time we had to use our fire engine for the final ride to the cemetery twice. The crossed ladders at the cemetery entrance, the playing of taps, the overwhelming show of support. An extremely emotional time. May Ryan rest in peace.

A great tribute to those who have fallen in the line of duty. You have done a great job in paying respect to those who put there lives on the line to serve and protect the rest of us.
Ryan may you rest in peace.

A fitting way to mark a devastating event Mimi. My thoughts go to Ryan's family and friends and to a society that has to try to make sense of such a terrible event. I like Les's comment above about Ryan having become a hero the moment he stepped onto his truck. How can anyone understand this?

That is a terrible story of the shotings, oh my God. This is a wonderful dedication to the fallen men. This shows depth of the number of fire trucks. Hope all is well for everyone there, they are in my thoughts and thanks for sharing this capture and story.
