Fall brings many changes to our surroundings. Obvious is the splendor of color among the trees. But color can be a danger to some of our feathered friends. So it is with this Goldfinch I captured in the Adirondacks. In Summer it sported the brightest of yellow plumage but now it molts to a drab olive gray. Barely a wisp of yellow still to be seen beneath its beak. I'm told this offers protection from predators by blending in more with Winters dull bare branches. Sounds reasonable to me ... until I see a beautiful bright red Cardinal in the dead of winter. What's up with that ?

Beautiful photo John. The bird appears to be cold sitting on the branch the way it has its feathers ruffled up. There is only one who knows the answer to your question about the Cardinal. Excellent capture and into my favs. Thanks so much John for sharing this little beauty with us.

Hello; thank you for the new picture for my favorites - this is wonderful! Really a dear picture, perfectly captured. You must be pleased :-) My understanding is that male cardinals do lose a fair bit (but not all) of their brilliance as well in winter, then get it back in spring. I'm surprised that blue jays don't too! Anyway, thank you again for lending your talents to capturing this picture - it's so well done. - Quiet

John, this is wonderful!! Such a clear photo, well composed and a great example of nature taking care of its creatures. Guess the cardinal's on its own, eh? LOL

John, if I'm not mistaken, cardinals taste bad to predators so sporting a bright red coat in winter is of no hinderance to them. In nature, yellow and reds generally tend to be warnings of poisonous critters. I didn't realize the goldfinches molted quite so extremely. I'm still seeing the drab yet still yellow females or youngsters around here.

This is a terrific shot again John...perfect detail in the focus and great pose by this little fellow...I do notice the the more subdued colors in these songbirds this time of year...I can't explain why Cardinal is so bright red in dead of winter...maybe it has something to do that they should be down south in winter instead of staying here in the north. I do understand that more birds are staying put in winter because there are more people feeding than ever before..and might have something to do also that our winters are not as cold as before because of global warming...anyways this is a great shot....gerry..

Great shot , the focus is spot one and the vertical branches all add to the shot.
