Starlings are NOT among my favorite birds. In large numbers they are a nuisance. In small groups ... bullies at the feeders. But I have to give them their due. Seasonal plummage in the right light can be nothing less than stunning to the eye. I haven't caught this one displaying those fluorescent hues, but I think this one of the better bird images I've captured of late. Obviously a biased opinion ... so I await yours "pro" or "con". Feel comfortable in expressing a "con" comment ... I hope I never get too old to accept an honest critique from which I can learn.

I dare to strongly disagree with you, John.
Starlings are just sweet and this is it.
And the best looking of all birds [OK second after sparrows LOL]
And they ARE NEVER any nuisance - how can you be so unfair ?! LOL
Seriously - nice portrait of a beautiful charming nicely coloured sweet tempered and lovable bird !!!!

If you say so Marzena LOL All of the European Starlings found today in North America-and they number in the 200 million range-are descendants of approximately 100 birds introduced in New York City's Central Park in the early 1890s. I can only assume their European charm has been corrupted over the years by the likes of us brash Yanks across the Atlantic. LOL Luv ya Dear Lady :o)

I can't recall ever seeing one of these visit my backyard John. I would certainly remember colors like these. You've got to admit they're beautiful even if they may be a nuisance. Great capture.

WOW .. fantastic capture ... I'd just like to say that without weighing in on the whole "Starling as Punk" debate ... but if I had to chime in on it, I would say you were bullied as a schoolkid and have a chip on your shoulder ... and a Starling swooped down and stole the chip

Very good one John, I know what you mean about the colors, they are amazing, I had one of these land on top of my feeder a few times, but when I move they are gone, I did get one though thru the window, I will post it now, because it does show the colors.

Your right about them being 'bullies'...thieves too! and are a nuisance at the feeder's!
But, this shot has all the merits of a PRO foto shooter mate!..contrasts and clarity are 'spot-on'...if it wasn't for the attitudes of these birds, then I would say this was a beauty!

Hello John...and bigtime congrats on this gorgeous shot of a most lovely birdie !! I care not how much of a nuisance he might be, he is still a bird and that makes him adorable.
Did you know that if we hear birdsongs first thing in the morning we actually start our day off better? A person can buy bird recordings and turn your whole house into a ' bird sanctuary' each morning. I love this picture of yours..and I thank you so much for a lovely gift on this day...verena

well John I think Starlings can be a bit of a pain - I often have them nesting in the eaves of my house and no matter now many times they get fixed they find their way in and I haven't the heart to shoo them off when they have young babies. I don't recall any in the UK looking smart like this one - they are usually just black and greasy looking!! lol! ...and this photo is excellent by the way - I find nothing to say that would improve it - just the title (2 letters short of copyright!!) LOL! just kidding! Patti

The colors on him are amazing John. He blends so well with the bark of the tree so he can hide :) Perfect capture with clarity and very nice composition.

I have no opinions about starlings - but this picture - well I think it is perfect.Wonderful colours and the texture of the bark is almost as beautiful as the bird.

I don't believe I have ever seen, nor had the pleasure of seeing this bird in the light you have presented to us.

They are indeed, or can be, a nuisance and are extremely smart as well. Evasive to a fault and that is probably a big contributing factor to their numbers.

Quite the shot. I am curious though, as to what extent ... if any ... if you performed some post-sweetening on this image. Yes, Curious Les, I am. :oP

Really nice work, regardless of the answer to the above.

I just saw this on the front page and am much impressed. I can't recall seeing starlings with the tan markings on wings and tail like this one. Usually they have the shiny iridescent look about them. This is a wonderful capture and as others have mentioned it is quite interesting how his colors seem to match the tree bark. It certainly deserves high marks!

I agree when you say these birds are a pain, but they are beautifully colored and have some very interesting sounds they can make. I think this picture is beautiful. He does appear to (wish) he was a woodpecker. =) Great shot dear.
