Being a fanatic about focus and clarity in my photographs, when this appeared on my screen, disappointment was a first reaction. Not sure why, but the more I considered options on how to "save" this image, I found the initial disappointment was turning toward satisfaction. Perhaps it was the "soft" focus that seemed to go well with the "soft" pastel colors in the background. The overall "softness" of the entire image struck me as something one might find in a childrens primer. I tried sharpening this but felt it looked better the way it left the camera. That's how it's presented here.

I welcome comments to my enigma ... be they harsh or "soft"

Hello John, I'm inclined to agree with you my friend. The pastels are lovely and it reminds me of a painting. Sometimes soft works very well as I think it did here. Such a sweet look you caught here on this sweeties face. =^..^= sandi ♪

You are quite right, John - the soft focus does suit the soft pastel background. I find it beautiful.

This is the way it left the camera? I don't know how you accomplished that but people spend hrs in PS trying to get that effect. The only thing that is really soft is thine head. Bye! Nice bird.

My first thought when seeing this is how the softness on the bird transmitted the softness of the breast feathers in real life. Mainly, I think the soft focus on the bird works partly because the bird himself (herself?) is looking actually contemplative...sort of untypical. When it is obvious that the photographer has captured a bird in the half-second after it moved and in the half-second before it is going to move again...then a really sharp focus is an accomplishment. Here, there is "time" to express a different aspect of "bird".

This reminds me a lot of some of the old Audubon Society plates back in the 50s. That background is superb.

Nice photo Mugz but I have never forgive that sparrow.

Ah, this is really nice. I love sharp focus, but once in a whilte, since I never really get that close to birds, I like to see them as I really do see them. This is a beautiful upload, and just HAD to save it.
