Tomorrow, 21st December, is the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year. I'm always struck by the way the sun's power is watered down at this time of year. This was taken at about 3.00 pm, about an hour before the sun was going to disappear after giving us just a short glimpse of daylight. Oh, and did I mention that it's 30 degrees C in Thailand right now? To use this as a desktop download at the biggest size. It works!

This is stunning Nigel!...what an example of low light shadows!...Superb my friend!...

Low sun at this time of year is a true pleasure for us photographers!....But it is also a bloody nightmare at times when driving!!!!

Go..Enjoy...

This is stunning and fav'd. Great dof (one of your trademarks), colors, and reflections. It has a "mystery" mood about it and could easily be used on the cover jacket of a classic novel.

OK, rub it in! This is a perfect winter scene. Nice you'll be escaping the cold for awhile, though.

Well, it's 72 degrees fahrenheit indoors at Tie Land, too. So there. LOL. ...this is a super picture. Everything about it. The sky the water and the grasses look great, and you even got some ripples in the water. Is that a duck I see? Good work. I hope you are having a jolly good time.

There is definitely a quiet quality to the light at this time of year. Well captured, Nigel, minimal color at its best.

Enjoy your holiday and bring us back many new sights. Happy Christmas!

A wonderful image, Nigel. Though the sun looks huge, it is providing only minimal heat to us in the west. I am jealous of your forthcoming trip, but I sure hope that you have a wonderful time in Thailand. Oh, and Merry Christmas to you also.

You will be led to the knowledge of the internal things which are invisible to you, by the external things which you see before you. . . . Even so then, we can represent to ourselves in thought the Author of all that is, by contemplating and admiring the (visible) things which He has made, and ever brings into being. - Hermes

One of your best Nigel. I have trouble getting the sky to look normal in low light situations but I realize it's my camera. I always like to see photo of what I can see but can't get. This is perfect. I like Donald out there mucking about too. Great post Nigel. Have a safe trip and a Merry Christmas to you.

Hello Nigel....I love this shot - the colours work perfectly with the scene, and the brightness has silhouetted the ground, handing to the overall strength of the scene.....Well done....All the best...Mick.

A beautiful silvery scene with a dreamlike and ageless quality - I love it. I even see a flock of birds flying home - perfect :)I may even burst into song "By the light, of the silvery moon . . " No perhaps not a good idea :)
A relaxing and cooling picture which makes a lovely desktop.
(it was 36C here Jan 2 - me no like)
