This is the "Potato Fire", raging just beyond Stanley, Idaho. At this moment in time, it was threatening to burn the ghost town of Custer, Idaho - a wonderfully restored mining settlement. See this link for more information. I took this photo just on the outskirts of Stanley as you head north from Sun Valley.

Mercy. How would you like to be those people in the ranch houses in the valley and have to look up and see this? The capture of the billowing smoke is awesome. I really enjoy your landscape postings, Nathan. They are some of the best. Keep them coming.

Menacing! Another one of nature's bad guys or bad at times that is. This is an amazing shot here, so clear, and a great reminder to all of just how small we are. I sure hope it didn't actually reach that settlement or anyone else for that matter.

Wow! Reminded me of Mt. St. Helens photos from years ago when it blew up. Very clear, excellent lighting on the smoke cloud. Enjoyed it.

This is terrific! Certainly gives the appearance of a volcano. The sky is beautiful and the focus and depth are perfect.

This is an outstanding photo! It's almost impossible to tell where the smoke stops & the clouds start. I'll be praying for those people. ;)

Having survived a couple of serious fires when living in the mountains, that brings back memories. You really caught the feeling of watching the smoke billowing up. Great capture!

Man with a billowing smoke pire like that how intense that must have been for those people. Fire is so fast to get out of control and just wipe everything away. Glad you were a safe distance. Great picture and maybe the news would love to see it.

Awesome Nathan. Thanks for the Okay!..I will email them to my son. You did another awesome job capturing the rolling smoke. Firefighters say that fire is a living breathing 'thing' that they must attack & kill. They respect fire tremendously. Thanks for sharing this with us :~)
