That MUST be something quite scary for them :D :D

Otherwise I love this pic once more. On the same subject but anyway totally different in the atmosphere tahn the first one you posted. Thanks for sharing these !

Great post Phil...I watched the whole live launch on the NASA site right up to 10 minutes after launch as the crew got out the camera and watched the main booster float away from the shuttle. Those birds had been flying around in the excitement...they must keep them clear of the launch area though? Propane canons? Didn't sound like they had too many glitches except some unexpected icing. The ISS is going to be so bright now with the new panel.

That is amazing now that I live here I want to see that in person some day I did here the last one land with the sonic boom that was cool... Looks like it would catch everything on fire.

Actually those billowing plumes of smoke is pretty much just water vapour. There's an acoustic pool set up below the launch pad that's flooded with water from that adjacent water tower to absorb the acoustic shock from the firing solid rocket boosters and shuttle's main engines...
