Today is the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 1 disaster when the crew - Virgil I.Grissom, Edward H. White II and Roger B. Chaffee - were killed when a flash fire erupted in their capsule during testing. Originally designated as AS-204, Apollo 1 was posthumously renamed and following missions would be numbered subsequent to the flight that never made it into space. Cleaned up and restored with Noise Ninja and Photoshop.

As I was watching CNN, the story of the 40th anniversary of this tragedy came on-just as I was looking at this photo. A wonderful photo of these men who gave their lives for space exploration.

Great picture! Of all the men. Roger B. Chaffee was from my hometown, he has his own Blvd, and a statue at the the Gerald R. Ford museum here!

Incredible timing*, on this, the 40th anniversary of the moon landing. Heros, and pioneers both. Great post. Hope this comes around again, but until it does, I'll keep it in my faves.

*It was in the "perm" spot on the front page.

Please, even if you don't visit my gallery, check out my "Faves".I've left them intact since day "1", and would like it if every image there got the attention they deserved.
