Shot taken by an ISS Expedition 15 crewmember using a Nikon D2X with a 28-70 mm lens. Sadly, it appears the tried and trusted Kodak DSLR’s will be dropped by NASA shortly as Kodak are stopping support for the long time defunct models.

Despite being over five years older than the latest Nikons, the Kodak Pro cameras have always produced first-rate highly detailed shots. The new images taken using the Nikon D2X show in sharp contrast how newer isn’t always better. Using the same lenses and roughly same resolution as the Kodak’s, the Nikon mission images have been very poor and almost completely unable to resolve any fine detail except at extreme close quarters. The sensor noise in this shot has all but destroyed any fine cloud detail and any that was left was pretty much seen off in the noise removal process. As a result many important opportunities for recording meteorological and geological events - such as the latest Shiveluch eruption - during the mission have been squandered due to very poor image quality. Shame. Hopefully they will either pass on the D2X and try the D3 instead or just ditch the brand completely and get some good medium format digital kit instead.

It is truely amazing that we can see images of these kind of events taken from space. You can really appreciate the size of this huge storm. It is a jaw dropping image.
