This composite image from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and Hubble Space Telescope shows the massive galaxy cluster MACS J0717 where four separate galaxy clusters have been involved in a collision — the first time such a phenomenon has been documented.

MACS J0717 is located about 5.4 billion light-years from Earth. It is one of the most complex galaxy clusters ever seen.

Some of the last work done by Hubble before it’s servicing. The telescope will not be producing any new tasked imagery until September of this year to allow time for extensive testing of the new and upgraded equipment installed recently.

Now how do they know that.........I think they just guess at half that stuff.....it's hard enough to get the miles to the nearest star right. LOL

no - light travels pretty much at a constant so the calculations are pretty rudimentary albeit involving lots of numbers - but you knew that - right?

:-)

BTW - the nearest extra solar star to us is currently 2.46896992 × 10 to the power of 13 miles away from us - roughly.
