I wanted to give this image a fluid look that I hope was achieved. Most “Western People” read from left to right so, with that in mind I used an old trick learned many years ago. Let your image "flow" from left to right. Note how the image is darker in the lower left side and becomes lighter as it moves upwards and to the right. I also gave the image an upward sweep to the right and where I wanted the focus of the image to be (the flowers of course) I left in relative chaos. That gives the eye its' focus. I sell a lot of my photography in the orient so, for that market I use just the opposite flow. So far it seems to be working well for me.

But words are things, and a small drop of ink, falling, like dew, upon a thought produces that which makes thousands, perhaps millions think and smile.

very nice shot, and techinique. I like the glow of the flowers. Also the light comming in from the right does add an interesting affect. I download the image and reversed it horizontally and not nearly the same effect was achieved. This techique would have been nice to know before I created my weekday roses, most of the are slightly pointed to the right anyways, but thats just because of the angle I took them. I wish I knew more photographic techniques and methods. You have inspired me to hit the books lol

A beautiful subject, and your technique certainly does it justice. The explanation is great, too - I think about the balance and flow of my shots but it would never have occurred to me to consider the reading direction of my intended audience! Clever stuff :-)

Great photograph, and even greater explanation! I love reading long descriptions like this, keep it up!

It's very interesting to hear that your oppositely flowed images are doing well overseas, I never thought such a simple idea could affect the way we "read" a photo so much.

Gosh Michael, I don't know how I missed this beautiful image the first time around Michael. I love the wonderful commentary that you gave us (and it is a great hint too!). I love the deep purple that is on the edge of the petals of these orchids. It adds depth and drama to these already dramatically beautiful flowers. Thank you for posting :~)
