The mighty Columbia River (The largest River West of the Mississippi) cuts a large canyon as it flows to the sea. It reveals the many lava flows that blanket the far Western US. (Here in the Tri-Cities where I live the lava flows are over 5 miles deep.) The River, at this point, begins its cut through the heart of the Cascade Mts. There are four notable volcanoes in this region, Mt. Hood, which is pictured here, Mt. Adams, Mt. St. Helens &, the largest of them all, Mt. Rainier. All of these volcanoes are asleep or dormant except for Mt. St. Helens, which is active at this time. I've used my soft focus lens here to give the landscape an almost ethereal look!.............. I'm sorry I haven't submitted any images lately; I've been laid up with a wounded back for the last little while. I seem to be on the mend, so I should be submitting more, on a regular basis. I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Beautiful and interesting area Mike. I was not aware that so many dormant volcanoes were so close together in that area. I hope Mt.St.Helens just keeps coughing. Mt. Ranier is the most familiar name to me...as the brew nourished me in my college days (it was cheap). Great capture...take care of that back;-)

In Mark Twain's "life on the mississippi" he talks about how the state line was decided by where the river cut thru ... you'd be in one state on monday and a different state on saturday ... because of the whim of the water. Looks like a little of that going on here.

Are the area volcanoes part of the "ring of fire" that includes the 'Aleutian' islands, Japan and who knows what else around the pacific?

Great photo, Michael. I'm so sorry you've been laid up with a bad back. I don't think there are too many things more painful than that. Hope you're up and around soon.

Is that a roar I here of Mike returning with a vengeance? Sorry to hear about your back, but I'm glad you're back with us. I am going to copy this image, because I'll be learning from it for a while. I love the way you used the soft focus to make the landscape appear ethereal, and the way you chose a lovely subject, the gorge to draw the viewer into the image, so we look and we look at the canyon's beauty before we suddenly realize that there is yet another element to this image - Mt. Hood! I can't get over the way you layered this image. Great work.

That's a beautiful capture, Michael. It's so hard to find a day clear enough to take such a shot around Portland. The high humidity almost always causes hazy "distance" shots. Wow, this one is terrific!

Glad you're back in action Michael. You really class up the joint! 10/10 from me and not much at this point I can add in commentary.

Very nice landscape, but it's a bit grainy and I don't care fro the black border.

I live near Portland...but I'm wondering where is this? Isnt there a hiway supposed to be seen somewhere in that brown rock? Its a fantastic shot of Mt Hood..but I also think its a bit grany..but then again...Mt Hood and its awesome look makes up for that. This appears much more "rustic" than what it truly is...but I love from where yiou took this photo!!

I love this soooooo much... Even though I knew all those mountains were so close to us here in Washington, I never really realized that we really are surrounded by volcanoes! BEAUTIFUL image and definitely a favorite.

I live on the other side of that mountain - in Portland Oregon; and BOY does the mountain look different from the east side! Very cool though - and she's a beautiful mountain from any side.

Beautiful shot. People disregard Eastern WA as just a place to drive through to get somewhere, but it really is beautiful if you know *how* to look at it. Am so glad you are sharing this gorgeous countryside with others. Have you been able to get into the Hanford Reach area?
