A friend of mine in Montana runs a captive wolf breading preserve. The object of the study is to raise young wolves from pups with little to no human contact. Then work on introducing them into the wild. Here we see Chinook (named after a warm wind that comes down out of the Rocky Mountains), the Alpha male of this small pack. Even though he has been habituated to humans, he can be quite fierce when protecting his pack. It’s a controversial project, to be sure. Whenever wolves and ranchers mix there can be trouble. If a wolf has been caught chasing or, worse yet, killing livestock it can mean an end to it or, at best, relocation to a more remote area.

I'd love to own him, but it's great to know that he may someday be able to run wild, and free. Beautiful photo, and a most worthwhile project. Very nice. =0)

Beautiful animal. The wildest animals I happen to see daily are hedgehogs because my Boris brings them in his mouth all the time from the bushes and enjoys having them for a moment before I come in and take them back to woods [with hands but it huuuurts like hell !!!].

This is technically a nice shot...artistically too. Is this a hybrid or a full blooded wolf? I thought it was a dog at first...very healthy looking animal. Most of the wolves around here in Colorado look a bit ratty. Thanks for posting this interesting piece.

Nice shot.
I think these kind of projects are nescessary to increase the wolf population.
So I hope your friends project succeed.....and Nature succeeds

This is a beautiful shot. I love the time of year here. It just wouldn't have been as dramatic in green. I could almost swear you posed him in between the stumps for the perfect balance too.

What a beautiful animal, such a clear photo also, the colors you caught here look great. I like the look on his/her face, away from the camera, nice pose. Great shot! I am placing this in my favorites.

im gonna have to agree with Peter on this.. doesnt seem to e a full-blooded wolf.. honestly, i have two purebred Siberian Huskies that have an almost identical profile.. this male and the elder of the two i have, could almost be twins..

it is a beautiful capture tho.. great contrast between the brush and the male there..

Leader of the Pack, hey that's you this week! Gratulations!

I really like the composition. And you know how much I like animals.
The image is a bit hard on the eyes. You could do something about the grass, for example select it it and aplly an edge erode. Then make it a b&w or sephia. Just an idea.

Brilliant composition and use of colour / lighting. It's easy to blow out the highlights, but you've managed to keep them just under check creating a great dramatic image. Absolutely stunning.
