A friend of mine in Montana runs a captive wolf breading preserve. The object of the study is to raise young wolves from pups with little to no human contact. Then work on introducing them into the wild. Here we see Chinook (named after a warm wind that comes down out of the Rocky Mountains), the Alpha male of this small pack. Even though he has been habituated to humans, he can be quite fierce when protecting his pack. It’s a controversial project, to be sure. Whenever wolves and ranchers mix there can be trouble. If a wolf has been caught chasing or, worse yet, killing livestock it can mean an end to it or, at best, relocation to a more remote area.
