Elevation, 10,023 feet- this is the crater of the dormant Heleakala volcanoe in Maui. The clouds you see are around the rim of the volcanoe crater and the rest of the mountain is beneath that. I sat at the edge of the crater looking down into it. Very peacful and amazing place to visit! Got to have some nerves to sit that close to the edge, no rails or anything to hold on to, just good old solid lava rock beneath your feet!

You are very lucky to have visited a place like this. This is a very cool shot. I love the clouds in the background. Thanks for sharing.

well here i am in hawaii(also) with no volcano to see! lucky you. the crater looks different than i thought. i like the texture and color of that good old solid lava. the rocks in the foreground and the clouds on top seem to frame the crater. i expected to see a seething caldron. (tee hee)

Thanks everyone! Just so you know: from where I sat, to the other side of the crater (at the clouds) is about eight miles across, so it's quite a distance. Also, the rising mounds are places where the volcanoe erupted in the past. Each of those is as tall as a building, but the view is very decieving!
