No. 1 in the New Orleans Cemetery Series

This street of the dead is in a cemetery near my house, and was a fair representation of the entire older part of the cemetery. The tombs date from the early 1800's and include the family who owned the plantation on whose lands my childhood home was built.

Shot with a Panasonic Lummox Digital.

After reading Anne Rice's books, it's nice to see such a shot. I think New Orleans has to be one of the most interesting places. This is a great shot and thanks for sharing it.

Thanks for your comments. This cemetery was built on the site of a horse-racing track, and its innermost tombs follow the ring of the original track. Legend has it that in the early 1800's a very successful black jockey from Europe came to New Orleans to race, and was turned away from the whites-only facility. Enraged at his treatment at the hands of the local establishment, he vowed to buy the entire place and turn it into a cemetery. I don't know if this is true, but it makes a good story.

I'm a big fan of cemetary images and a big fan of Anne Rice too! This is a great shot, has it been manipulated? Regardless, very well done.

Thanks for the recognition, mes amis! Actually I'm not very good at manipulation. Usually when I do it the image turns out worse than when I started. The exception seems to be removal of clutter from photos which works pretty well. On this shot all I was able successfully to do was to soften the focus a tiny bit. It seemed appropriate.

another great shot of new orleans. when i was growing up, my grandma lived on city park ave right across from the cemetery, and we used to walk down the street and just walk up and down the graves. they are beautiful, in their own way. good job.

I'm glad you take these cemetary images. There are many exquisite stones and statuary to see. I like this view of the walkway - goes on and on. Always a tranquil place to visit and interesting storys are found on some stones. Thanks for this silent walk...
