In the 1850's this row of oak trees was planted by slaves - people who belonged to other people. From that inauspicious beginning sprang a tradition at this house on the Mississippi river, a tradition of planting oak trees. These trees remember a sky with no airplanes and air with no chloroflourocarbons. They remember a time when the ships that passed on the river just beyond the levee here did not have engines, a time when this river marked the western cultural boundary of a young nation. I visit them every year, and I bring a watch that belonged to my great-great grandmother who was born across the river from this spot at almost the same time these trees were planted. I hold that watch and I touch these trees and I know I am home.

I keep going back to this image. Is that the levee you mention in the background?
I wonder what this would look like without the defined transition from border to image. I'm thinking that a fade top and bottom from black to image might be interesting. Just my suggestion, of course.

that's a touching background story.. i think the image is beautiful, but after reading the description, it became even more wonderful.. i dare to say: perfect. thank you for telling us the story.. those slaves hadn't had their freedom, but that oak tree has grown free through the centuries and compensated the most priceless thing - freedom..

and for the image... i like the lightning in this one very much, sun rays make an interesting shades in the grass; nice contrasts as well and good work on the details (bark of the tree, leaves..), but i like the shadows the most, it gives a certain mysterious spirit and increases the positive effect of the story. btw, great framing as well!

thank you for sharing this image with us! have a nice day! :)

The way you've cropped it gives a tremendous strength to these oaks and I love the way the light streams through from the left. Looks like the retreat brought you back to where you needed to be and thanks to this image we can share in that serenity.

The composition of this one from those solid trunks to the graceful sweep of the branches is quite unique to my eyes. I think the intro is almost as good as the photo.

I give this a 10 for originality, appropriateness and courage and for the very striking result. The framing of the shot is very unorthodox and exactly what it should be. Kudos for having the vision to see the treatment this subject needed and to follow through completely. Great result.

Oh the feeling. I well understand. I lived in Louisiana for 14 years and the oaks were magical for sure! All the "old" homes in South Louisiana have such wonderment about them with these gorgeous trees. We lost a lot of them around us one day when a bad tornado literally uprooted them...I appreciate your feelings...trees are wonderful anyway! And the story you told is grand...yes, I would also love to see a whole frame filled with this or any of the other shots you might have taken of the oaks..but this is an awesomephoto....thank you for posting it and the take behind it. Love the watch part..!!

one of those rare occasions when I feel that letterbox framing has accectuated the already powerful framing (of the brances) composition sympathetically

very nicely done
and thanks for sharing your emotional roots for taking and crafting the photo, with us :)

Those beautiful Oak trees..Looking at this I can feel the history in those trees. They are so ancient appearing and stately. I'm always in awe of the Oak trees whenever I get to pass them.
Truely a lovely desktop-I like the way you framed this image...
