The French people have such an aesthic that when you travel around in the country you see such prosaic things as harbor cranes lighted at night in colors that make them seem diaphanous, and arranged in such a way as to make them seem alive. These cranes delight the eyes of drivers around the harbor of Marseilles at night.

Well, good for them I say...turning something otherwise unsightly into a work of art...and good for you in the capture of them...great shot in color, lighting and unique subject matter.:Pat.

I have to say that I agree with all of the above. The exposure is great, and the exploration into various borders is proving quite intersting.

I like this shot. The subject matter is good to start with and you have captured it nicely. The way it is framed seems to add to the image somehow - perhaps by cutting out the distractions of the rest of the scene and concentrating on the main subjects. The reflection in the water works well too and is accentuated by the vertical framing. Did you take the picture this way, or crop it?

No, I actually shot it that way. I also shot it about twenty other ways, since I don't know anything about composition, and this one was the good one. As I pointed out to Matthew,I had lost my expensive monopod, so I was reduced to balancing on a seawall using a walking stick to stabilize my camera.

Nice shot. The reflections and the shade of blue really make this picture in my oppinion. It is alittle soft due to i would guess the camera moving around a tad, but that is very difficult with out a good tripod, so you did extreemly well with what you had. I think, not sure, but think, it might be nice to have it slightly brighter exposure wise because i think it would be nice to be able to make out alittle bit of the background. (just slightly though, not to much). Nice shot though. It is awesome that something that should be ugly like a crane looks so good.

Who’d a thought of psychedelic cranes? They look pretty neat lit up like that. You got a good eye to spot this one.

Nice shot. Different. Cool blues and I like the delicate yet not so basic two-tone framework.

If they've got to sit there and be part of the sky line anyway why not be beautiful and dramatic to look at? They are by far the most beautiful pieces of heavy equipment I've ever seen. great composition here I agree wholeheartedly with Matthew up there on this one.

Hey there my friend . Its so good to see your posting again...I always miss your photos when there is a long wait for them to appear. I hope you are doing well, and that New Orleans is too., as well as can be. I think of you often..As to this photo..wow.!!! They look like robots sitting on the side of the river, watching over what's happening. I love the blue, and those reflections are fantastic. And your choice of framing makes the whole photo just be all the more emphatic! Its a wonderful work of art!! hugs to you Regmar...verena

Considering that this is a spotlighted image surrounded by black, you might consider blending out that wall on the right side so it fades to black as it does on the opposite side. You could then enlarge the entire image to turn it into a horizontal. Since black is black, no one would ever know you edited it (except,of course, anyone reading this comment).
