How neat. He is probably watching the traffic outside or the people on the sidewalk, hoping, just hoping, that someone will need a haircut, a shave, or, maybe a tooth extracted. Someone come in and we can talk about The Babe, the politicians, or some movie now playing downtown at the cinema. It is a wistful look borne from repeated boredom. And just think, this picture was not taken by a cell phone but rather through quite an elaborate process.

This is such a great image Rob and you did an excellent job with the colorization - looks like something caught the attention of the barber's eye - love the window frame and barber pole!!!!!!!!!!!

Rob, I love this site for more than twelve years. Not only because of the contributed artworks, but because of the given comments as well.
Think that, on the one hand, the by you perfectly colorized capture is a good example of the by Caedes given opportunity to share very interesting and good artworks. On the other hand is the priceless comment of John above (with a terrific sense of humor), is a very good example too how a 'cherry on top of the cake' can be given.
I love your contribution for the above reasons, my friend! Very well done per usual!

There is so much in this photo that depicts the era in which it was taken. Colorization must have been easy, you surely have something in your instinct that gives you the ability to compliment these scenes so spectacularly. The stance of the barber is interesting, have no idea of the "nasty twist" and very curious about it. I agree with Cornelius's comments, very well said.

Fantastic colouring on this one - the colours of the lettering is what would have actually been. Business looks a little slow

Nice work, Rob.

... ...

I do have a suggestion for you.. and it is has it's roots in the principle of balance: "What is Balance in Photography?"

The stripes on the barber pole? Me?

I would have made them a *slightly* deeper, darker shade of red.

'But, Les.. your link above talks about balance.. wouldn't that throw the balance off?'

Yes.. yes, it would.

I am suggesting deepening the colour of the stripes of the barber pole to, first.. draw in your viewers and then, act as an anchor for the image.

... ...

^ Personal preference.. most likely.

As it appeals to my creative sensibilities for the barber to be discovered after the fact.

That said..

Nice work, and a.. +favs.. for me.

...'But, Les.. your link above talks about balance.. wouldn't that throw the balance off?' Yes.. yes, it would...

Hi Les in answer to the pole was a really hard to colorize .... I can really hear you thinking now ???....When colorizing you sometimes run into the unexpected like the dreaded pole gave me nightmares...

How you say well it would not blend ??? as I always try not to paste on the colors but to blend them makes for a more well let's call it natural look. To my best efforts it would not work so opted for an easy fix ...I bared my soul in the comment box above.

...Gave this one a kind of nasty twist let's see who spots it...

Well for the time period the pole should have been red, white and blue
but at that moment I was flustered so opted for just red. But red was more in use before 1900 and had a bloody past. The red, white and blue was a link to the American flag which would have been correct. The nasty twist I mentioned ...barbers pole twist bloody past red well you get the idea. After I posted the red pole kept working on the red, white and blue and did get it right but I found out what was going on with THE POLE huummppff.

What thru me of was...Created / Published 1941 May...

Alright here it comes some things are not easy to do take for example my image An Old Man
he is smoking a cigarette the smoke curls up towards his face that adds an extra degree of difficulty it's hard not to blend the smoke with the color of the background. Well you say so what (Big reveal)snow and ice/frost have the same problem the pole was frozen and iced up the ice and frost threw my blend attempts for a loop having figured out that the picture was taken somewhere in january and published in may I could work around and get the blend to work better that's why the the color is not so prominent the glass was iced over think they call it the freeze there LINK The Pole Want to thank Les for his honest comment and the interest in my work. This comment is not to scare people of from manipulation/colorized but to encourage them to try it anyone who feels the itch to try well send me a PM glad to help.

Hmmmmmm.... that reminds me.... I'm gettin' a little shaggy. [oD

For this one I will refer to my comment on "Freeze", and the history of the barber pole stripes (completely disregarding Sweeney Todd, the demon barber, of course).
